FAQ

Browse through a list of the most commonly asked questions regarding Scalp Micropigmentation.  Learn more about how SMP works, and what to expect before, after and during your procedure.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation is also known as SMP is a non-surgical service that uses very fine micro-needles to apply color pigment to the treatment area. This process is great for thinning hair to give it a fuller look and is also great for camouflaging scars. For those who have no hair at all, this process creates the look of a full head of hair with the appearance of a buzz cut.

How long does each treatment take?

Depending on the service we’re providing a session can last between 2-4 hours. To achieve the full results of SMP you will need at least 3 sessions and possibly up to 6. These treatments are generally scheduled about 7-14 days apart.

How often do I need to do touch-ups?

Given that SMP is a form of permanent cosmetics or scalp tattoo the results should last 4-6 years without fading. However, unlike a regular tattoo, the pigment we use for SMP contains no additional colorants or additives and will only lighten (not discolor) over time. When the color does fade it will be a very slow and gradual process, when this occurs we’ll have you back in for a quick touch-up.

How much does Scalp Micropigmentation cost?

Since every client’s hair loss journey is different, the costs can vary. But generally, the price ranges from $2,500 – $4,000. During your consultation, we’ll provide a more detailed plan along with specific pricing for you.

Will Scalp Micropigmentation work if I still have long hair?

Some clients are able to keep their hair long, but that all depends on both the pattern and extent of the thinning hair.  SMP will help thicken areas so there is less bare scalp visible, however, if the client’s hair loss pattern is too strong or there isn’t enough density we do recommend a shorter hair cut to help give it a more natural appearance.

Can Scalp Micropigmentation help camouflage scars?

Absolutely!  Scalp Micropigmentation is the perfect solution to cover scars.  The SMP process creates the look of tiny hair follicles inside the scarring, we then blend color around the area to give it a natural look.  This works for both transplant and other surgical scars.

How well does Scalp Micropigmentation match skin tone?

We offer a wide range of skin tone pigments and can easily match Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, African-American, Pacific Islander, and more.  During the consultation, we’ll cover just how this color matching works.  Feel free to check out our before and after pictures on our Instagram or Facebook accounts.

Will I need to take time off work to recover?

Since the SMP is non-surgical it is unlikely you will need to take any time off work. While you may notice some redness in the treatment area for 2-3 days following the service, this redness quickly subside. Clients are welcome to wear head coverings following treatments.

Does Scalp Micropigmentation hurt?

Most clients report that the pain is minimal as compared to other body tattoos.

What does aftercare look like?

Following treatment, we recommend no scrubbing, shampooing, shaving, heavy sweating, or exercise for 4-5 days. In addition, it is recommended that you avoid pools, saunas, steam rooms, and tanning beds for at least 28 days after your final treatment.

What happens during the consultation, and do you charge?

The consultation is 100% free. During this time we’ll review your hair loss and talk thru options and recommendations. We’ll also make recommendations on a new hairline if applicable. We’ll cover what to expect during the process, our equipment, and the timeline. This is your time to ask questions and become more comfortable with the entire process.
